As a geologist, he competes throughout the year with other scientists for grant money from the government and various charitable foundations. Charlie needs to expand his research by hiring more people and exploring new terrain. To do that, he needs to obtain a substantial part of the funding at this year’s conference in Las Vegas. In past years he’d done well at this conference. He had garnered seconds or thirds with the appropriate funding attached. His goal, of course, is a first-place award. It would get him the money he needs, along with prestige. On the way to Vegas, however, things happen that threaten his attendance and his life. What is happening, and why? What secrets are being kept, and who is keeping them? Hapless reasoning can end up getting people hurt, and good intentions can turn out poorly. On one of those hot, humid, and rainy days in August, events occur two thousand miles apart that threaten the lives of two families.
