PRE-RELEASE REVIEW

Annie’s Karma is a super followup novel to Karma Visited. I was intrigued by many things that evolved and expanded throughout the book, not the least of which is the incredibly detailed (although fictional, I must guess) accounts of astral travel, alongside the thriller aspects of the story.

Book Review: The Thruway Killers by Harvey Havel

Buckle Up For The Thruway Killers: A Rollicking Commentary On Greed, Murder And Mayhem

When values collide and money is thrown in the mix, anything can happen. Author Harvey Havel is back with The Thruway Killers (America Star Books), a delightfully fast-paced crime novel that also points out the absurdities of our times.

Havel does not shrink away from touchy issues of race and religion. Droogan McPhee is the eldest son of a prosperous businessman, and he lacks his father’s sense of propriety and drive to succeed. To his father’s horror, the unemployed, overweight, crack-smoking Droogan becomes romantically entangled with one of the family’s African-American maids. His father uses money to put a wedge between the couple, and Droogan is motivated to act.

A botched murder plot follows, and Droogan and his beloved Angela begin their odyssey up the iconic New York Thruway, pursued by Agent Roderigo Rojas of the FBI and a mercenary named the Spartan. When Droogan slips into a shadowy religious cult, his problems begin to multiply. Havel, with an outsider’s perspective and a keen sense of fun, explores American cultural and political fault lines and whether crossing lines leads to ruin.

Harvey Havel, born in Pakistan with family ties to India, is a prolific writer. His third novel, Freedom of Association, was published in 2006. Other novels include Charlie Zero’s Last-Ditch Attempt, and The Orphan of Mecca, Book One. He is formerly a writing instructor at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. He also taught writing and literature at the College of St. Rose in Albany as well as SUNY Albany. Copies of his books and short stories, both new and used, may be purchased at and by special order at fine booksellers everywhere.

Praise for The Thruway Killers

Kirkus Reviews: “…Police chases and social commentary come together in this rollicking murder story about an affluent family torn apart by greed, prejudice, and its own foibles….Havel packs a good deal into his novel, which at first glance may appear to be a simple crime story. Themes of interracial or interreligious marriage predominate, from both a black and white perspective…a lot of fun.”

Texas Book Nook: “…wonderfully written and very suspenseful…not for the faint of heart as this one definitely left me looking over my shoulder. Fast paced and filled with surprise moments….”

The Indie Express: “You won’t want to put it down….There were many surprises and the way that Harvey Havel was able to keep the pacing just right really helps everything flow naturally.”

Novel News Network: “I liked the diversity of the novel. It pulls together different elements, all of which are executed well and come together seamlessly….I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed the fact that Harvey Havel was able to surprise me a couple of times. I always like a novel that keeps me guessing.”

Review

“Marie Sutro’s debut novel, Dark Associations, may just be this generation’s Silence of the Lambs. Erotic and frightening, it keeps the reader guessing until the last pages.”
– STEVE ALTEN, New York Times Best-Selling Author of Meg & Domain

“Dark Associations is a crime thriller extraordinaire that offers a deviously devilish mix of madness, murder, and mayhem. Marie Sutro’s finely tuned and polished debut effort channels the best of Thomas Harris, while serving up a serial killer who’d make even Hannibal Lecter blush… Grisly without being gratuitous, Dark Associations is like a literary battering ram, as relentless as it is riveting.”
– JON LAND, USA Today Best-Selling Author of Strong Cold Dead

“Dark Associations is a wickedly compelling debut by Marie Sutro, who presents us with a great cast of characters and a villain who’s as sadistic as they come. This one will keep you guessing right up till the end.”
– SPENCER KOPE, Author of Collecting the Dead

Book Review: The Ice Merchant by Paul Boor

Chilling Secrets, The Best Sort Of Escape: The Ice Merchant

Serious readers perfectly understand the advantage of well-written fiction: it’s an escape from whatever ails you, whenever it’s convenient. The Ice Merchant, Paul Boor’s newest novel, set in Galveston, TX in 1889, is a tale of the post-civil war ice trade, new medical schools, trafficking in corpses, the discovery of a cure for yellow fever, and a chilling reminder of our human frailties.

The story begins in 1889, when a shrewd Yankee ice merchant, Nicolas Van Horne, is carving out a profitable side-business. Deep in his ship’s icy hold, dozens of human cadavers lie between the huge blocks of ice. On this delivery, his first to Galveston’s new Medical School, Nicolas is enthralled by Galveston’s lady scientist Rene Keiller, but he also makes the ghastly discovery that he’s been trafficking in murdered boys.

It will take Rene’s help to eventually solve the puzzle his ice holds . . . but first he must overcome his personal demons, including morphine addiction, even as he becomes inextricably entangled in lovely Rene’s experimental work on the most dreaded killer of their time, yellow fever.

paul-boorPaul Boor, M.D., is a scientist and professor at Galveston’s medical school, the oldest west of the Mississippi, and home to the highest-level, infectious Bio-Lab. His first novel, The Blood Notes of Peter Mallow, was a modern biomedical thriller acclaimed as “real, raw and on the edge.” In The Ice Merchant, Dr. Boor goes back in time to explore the history of medical research and the body trade, while spinning a tale of romance and human imperfection.

Amazon readers say:

“I would recommend this book to everyone that likes a book full of suspense. Once I started reading I actually could not put it down and expect not to do anything else. Since it took place in Galveston you could imagine all of the places that were mentioned and the way that they might of looked back then. The plot was great!!! Dr. Boor did a remarkable job. I recommend buying this book….you will not regret it.” ~ Phyllis Scalise

“This book is a true gem. First of all, it is well written throughout, without … the mistakes that non-professional authors often make. Second, it is quite different from most books I have read and tells a haunting tale with the story happening in Galveston, TX, and upstate New York, written with great authority and historical insight. Third, the story is realistic for the time (the end of the 19th century) and the language has the right tilt for the time. And last but not least, the book kept my interest from the first to the last page and offered a number of unexpected twists and turns.” ~ SrgnFsh

“Here’s a book to ‘sink your teeth into!’ I thoroughly enjoyed the story partly set in Galveston in 1899. Intriguing premise about procuring bodies for a medical school – very believable. The characters were believable and I cared about the welfare of the protagonist and others who were struggling to find the cause and cure of yellow fever. A ‘must read’ for Galvestonians and anyone interested in the history of the Gulf Coast prior to the devastating 1900 storm.” ~ Elizabeth Anderson

Book Review: Into the Darkness [A Piet van Zyl Adventure Thriller] by Paul Zunckel

Piet van Zyl steps into the darkness of the mind when a violent blow to the back of his head causes him to suffer memory loss. Left for dead, to wander the wilds of the Zambezi Valley, home to the big five, unarmed and with no memory of who he is or where he comes from.

The search is on for the burly South African, one a search and rescue, the other a seek and destroy. Who will get to Piet first… will he survive the wilds of Africa, the land he loves, or will it destroy him?

5 starsAction packed with several nailbiting suspense scenes

Reviewed by FSW

The author posess the ability to smoothly tells a gripping story full of adventure and a lot of unexpected twists and turns. I admire Piet’s determination to stay alive, the courage he had to teach the rhino horn poachers a lesson they will never forget. I judge many a story from how I would have edit it, but Paul Zunckel writes stories that flow and there is not a single line/word that I would have deleted. The character Piet loves his wife dearly, I like the banter between them where she throws a boot at him and he ducked just in time. This book let me laugh out loud, and feel every emotion. It has severel nailbiting suspense scenes. The characters of Piet, Peggy, their baby Heather and Piet’s close knit friends Veronika and the Frenchman are believable and loveable. Even Piet’s workers has great admiration and respect for him and it is clear that Paul Zunckle succeeds in writing the character traits of each of his characters. Paul writes with great humor and insight which provide the emotion needed for spesific dramatic actions/events. I would recommend that you read all of his action-packed books.

Amazon Customer Review

5 stars  This is a great series! Murder, mystery, spirits, romance and some funny “friends”!

By Indy Girl

“Ghost Hunter” is the second book in “C” series written by Morgana Best. This is a fun series about Prudence Wallflower, a clairvoyant medium and her encounters with spirits who approach her to relay messages to a loved one. She does this at booked venues around the country.
She has been approached by Alum Mullein, a “ghost” who was a detective murdered by his police officer partner. Alum has been appearing to Prudence several times in her home. In the past she has not been able to see ghosts and now realizes that Alum may not be a ghost afterall! He may be coming in and out of a coma state because he is hearing conversations while he’s lying in a hospital bed with monitors and IV’s.
A constable has been murdered and Prudence stakes out two constables homes to determine which one is dead and which one is going to the place Alum is being cared for. Alum heard that his partner would be coming to see him and fears that he will kill him for sure. He is staying awake more and more. Once he comes out of the coma, he won’t be able to appear to Prudence and if his partner gets there first, it will be too late!
In the series, Prudence also has some light-hearted but very pushy friends who keep trying to fix her up with a man. One “friend” in particular is an especially irritating know-it-all who doesn’t know the meaning of minding her own business. She walks in if Prudence leaves the door unlocked. She looks in her windows, breaks a valuable family heirloom, afterward claiming she’s an expert and the item wasn’t valuable anyway.
Meanwhile Prudence’s agent met with her to tell her that some of her venues may be cancelled because of the increase in clairvoyant mediums in the area.
As troubling as that bit of news is, her first priority is to find Alum as fast as possible.
This is an event filled book and is a joy to read! Suspense, laughter and romance!
I was given an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I eagerly await the next one!
