The Dog Lady of Mexico shares Alison’s remarkable journey, which began when she and her husband, Jeff, were soaking up the sun on the Mexican island during a much-anticipated month-long honeymoon. The stray animals roaming freely seemed to be woven into the island culture — just another aspect of the backdrop. Until she took a closer look. First, a tiny, pregnant, toothless cat caught Alison’s attention. Then along came a dog with a litter of 12. The animals were suffering, disease-ridden and without any sources of food or clean water.

Alison’s honeymoon became the catalyst to a lifelong pursuit to save as many neglected cats and dogs as humanly possible. Her first rescue took place in 2001, and before she knew it, she was assisting with the creation of the island’s first spay and neuter clinic.

The Dog Lady of Mexico compellingly and accurately depicts Alison’s story through a character named Rose. Her valiant efforts to help stray dogs and cats eventually grew into the nonprofit Isla Animals, which offers free spays and neuters, low-to-no cost veterinary care, arranges adoptions, and runs owner education to help whittle the number of animals destined for the same bleak existence.

The problems Alison encountered were numerous. There are no veterinarians in many areas, so most of the animals are never vaccinated or treated for parasites. The average dog is thin, mangy, and tick and flea infested. Needless to say, they are not welcome inside the home so even dogs that have owners are subject to the same conditions as street dogs. Since most of the people can’t afford a car, and taxi drivers refuse to pick up passengers with dogs, they have no way to get to a veterinarian … and the cycle just goes on and on.

Readers of The Dog Lady of Mexico will experience a world very different from their own, and will see firsthand the blood, sweat, tears and, yes, even laughter, that accompany such massive rescue efforts. They get to share the journey of Rose, whose life takes an uncharted course into unknown territory, and experience the passion that changed a life forever.

Alison is a recipient of The Doris Day Animal Kindred Spirit Award, and in 2007 she was invited to Mexico City for the first Forum on Small Animal Overpopulation in Mexico. To date, Alison has spayed or neutered more than 20,000 animals and promoted adoptions in Mexico, the United States and Canada. Alison resides with her husband in Boulder, Colorado.

Fabulous Book!

I Love this book! Alison is truly a gifted writer! Great storytelling and characters and character development. Heartwarming, heartbreaking (at times), and adventurous read! I loved Alison’s first book too….No Urn for the Ashes too ( a mystery/thriller).

Proceeds from the book go to Isla Animals a registered non-profit animal welfare association in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. This would make a great gift for animal lovers, Mexico lovers and well ….anyone who would enjoy an engaging inspiring read!

Such a wonderful story! An easy, pleasurable read that will tug at your heart strings. “The Dog Lady of Mexico” will at moments, make you sad, even angry, but I promise you, it’ll make you laugh and warm your heart as well. I’ve personally visited and volunteered at the shelter that “Rose” built from the ground up. The work done there, and by many volunteers over the years, has made an immeasurable difference in the welfare of companion animals of the region. This wonderful book will take you on the sometime trying, but ultimately uplifting journey of “Rose” and her tireless efforts to improve the lives and health of dogs in her corner of the world. If you love animals, you will absolutely love this book.

Firefighter made living room triage center
to save neighbors hit by Tennessee tornado

As soon as the tornado passed, Putnam County firefighter and EMT Darrell Jennings went outside to an “unbelievable sight” — his home was the only one standing.

“I heard screams and I looked to my right — none of my neighbors’ houses were there. They were gone,” he told ABC News on Tuesday. “As lightning flashed, I could see the subdivision side — the only thing standing was a tree.”

Jennings, a 32-year veteran firefighter, said he then immediately put his years of training into action and put out a call for injured neighbors to be taken to his home.

“As soon as I saw the destruction, I had my fire department radio, I called in… and said, ‘I need you to send me everything we have. Everything around me is destroyed,'” he recalled.

Jennings said he treated at least 20 injured neighbors, including several children, in his living room, where he checked for pulses, assessed breathing and gave sternal rubs.

“The floor was covered with people,” he said.

Movie Review: San Andreas

SAN ANDREAS

When the San Andreas fault triggers a magnitude 9 earthquake, a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) must navigate the destruction from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save his daughter.

Disaster film SAN ANDREAS has a pretty predictable story line with enough edge-of-your-seat tension to make you doubt its predictability. Dwayne Johnson is a real hero, he is completely human as well as an eye-catching hunk; he has really come a long way as an actor. Archie Punjabi as Serena the reporter shows genuine interest in her subjects and is instrumental in getting vital news out to the the devastated area. The visual effects were fantastic ~ see it in 3D if you can, you’ll feel as if you are there. As disaster movies go this one definitely gets 5 Stars

By the way, some critics have lambasted the science behind the movie, I’m not a scientist, I went to see it to be entertained and it did that job very well.
