Catskills Cabaret at Neve Shalom featuring Kenny Ellis

Kenny Ellis is perfectly at home performing at a Catskill’s resort, The Copacabana, The Improv, the Miami Beach club scene, a kibbutz, army camp or the national radio in Israel – or the stage in any synagogue here or abroad. With early career years spent working his way through the New York performing arts scene, from Broadway to upstate, Ellis counts singing with Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach z”l at the Roosevelt Hotel as one of the highlights of his career.

Ellis is most well known for his 2005 Hanukkah Swings CD, still a consistent top seller in its category on Amazon Music. “Part of my life’s work has been discovering new entertaining avenues to show what Jewish life can be. [The CD] is a celebration of Jewish life and music, not just for people of our culture and faith, but for everybody,” Ellis says of this work.

When he’s not performing or teaching, the Philadelphia-born Ellis serves as the cantor at Temple Beth Ami in Santa Clarita, CA (Los Angeles area), where he has worked since 2010. Prior to Temple Beth Ami, he was the cantor at Temple Beth Haverim in Agoura Hills, CA for 15 years.

Join friends, fellow congregants and fans of all ages on May 4 at 7 PM when Julie Silver graces our stage with her angelic voice and inspired compositions. As Craig Taubman puts it: “Julie is more than an entertainer; she is a muse, a presence, and a spirit that stays with you long after the show has ended.”

With roots in Massachusetts, Julie was leading raucous song sessions throughout the Reform Jewish movement and playing coffeehouses in and around Boston by age 18. Eventually, she would become one of the most sought-after song leaders in the country, a favorite with Jewish and secular audiences alike. Without backing from a major label, Julie has sold more than 100,000 copies of her CDs. Among her recording milestones is the success of “It’s Chanukah Time,” a CD recorded in 2007, which was the first Jewish holiday CD produced exclusively for the Barnes and Noble bookstore chain and the ONLY Jewish album to ever be recognized on Billboard, peaking at #5 in 2009.

Julie’s performance marks our 24th annual Susy Schwartz Memorial Scholarship Fund concert and continues our tradition of bringing the Jewish music world’s best and brightest acts to Neve Shalom. The goal of the fund is to raise money to give each Bar or Bat Mitzvah a “Passport to Israel.” Each child now receives a voucher for $1,000, which may be redeemed towards any trip to Israel that has an educational component, taken between ninth grade and the end of college. High school students are also eligible to receive an additional $1,000 from the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County.

Primary funding for the Passport to Israel program comes from this annual concert event. So, on behalf of the next generation of Jews we are nurturing to love and support Israel, we urge you to consider becoming a Benefactor ($200) or Patron ($100) of the Concert. General admission is also unchanged at $20 for adults ($25 if purchased at the door), and $12 for children under 12. Free babysitting will once again be available by preregistration.

Please call Rita at Neve Shalom at 732-548-2238, ext 18 if you need additional information. This year’s concert chairs are Rena Kallman and Barbara Du-Bois.

Tickets ordered after April 27 will be held for pickup at the desk on concert day.
