Book Promo ~ Committee of Angels

A medical drama with a touch of romance

The article passed around the table on a hot August night. “Five to ten percent of the nation’s doctors are so impaired or incompetent they cannot or should not practice medicine.” The nurses at Bradley Memorial thought they had them all. That night they formed a group they called The Committee of Angels.

Nearly a year has passed and Laura Bancroft wonders why little has been done to change things. She also wonders about some of the nurses fitting the pattern. Laura has three doctors on her list of incompetents. She seldom meets with the other members and several of the others are upset with her. When her ex-husband joins the medical staff, she realizes she still has feelings for him. One of her list of doctors dies after emergency surgery and Laura finds her suspected since she was assigned to the doctor. She must deal with suspicions, her feelings for her ex. Then a second on her list commits suicide and speaks of blackmail.

Can Laura learn the truth of who is responsible before she faces arrest?

Distinctive Female Characters Propel Engaging
Murder Mystery, Death by Chaos

They are the undisputed “goddesses” of their Southern California liberal arts college. The four women met as randomly assigned roommates, and despite their diverse backgrounds and interests, they have a bond that will last for decades. Tasha is the flirty theater arts major; Elizabeth, gifted with classic beauty and intelligence, majors in pre-law; Dawn is the intuitive daughter of a single Navajo mother, and an outstanding psychology student; and Miranda is an athletic, ultra-liberal journalism major. With distinct talents and trajectories, each young woman seems destined for a Charmed Life. But just before graduation, a student is found murdered. Suspicion falls in their midst, and destinies are changed forever.

Death by Chaos is a clever, entertaining mystery from Renaii West, with complex female characters, colorful dialogue and enough surprises to keep readers guessing.

The ensuing murder investigation threatens to derail the women’s friendship — and possibly their futures. One of the four women becomes a person of interest and goes missing. And one of them knows much more than she’s sharing.

Over the next two decades, the case remains unsolved, and three of the women enjoy success in their respective careers. But one woman is still missing, and one remains haunted by the chaos of that ill-fated night. With an upcoming reunion on the horizon, and the arrival of a stranger on a motorcycle bringing even more turmoil, the time seems right to finally revisit the past, uncover the secrets and expose the truth. There’s one major catch: there are those who wish the case to remain unsolved. Finding answers and the closure the four women so desperately need will require good acting, deception and maybe a little divine intervention.

upbeat story about long buried family secrets,

the complex relationship between a young man and his father,
and an adventurous hunt for both hidden treasure and difficult truths.

Years after the death of his gangster father, a young man
discovers a letter that sends him reluctantly defying the
mob as he races to locate a hidden treasure.

The love between a father and a son can be both complicated and compelling, especially when the father is a charming rogue. “Blackie” Rinaldi had ties to the mob, and his only son has done all he can to avoid the pitfalls of his father’s chosen path. But when an enigmatic letter hinting at a cache of stolen money surfaces six years after Blackie’s untimely death, the younger Rinaldi is forced to confront his father’s colorful past.

An international treasure hunt ensues, with surprising twists and engaging characters. Fool’s Errand from Jeffrey S. Stephens, author of the popular Jordan Sandor series, is an entertaining story of family ties and a parent’s never-ending influence.

Blackie’s son follows a series of clues from the mean streets of New York to the Las Vegas Strip, and ultimately to the South of France. Along the way, he is confronted by dangerous mobsters, dishonest relatives, suspicious friends, a mysterious woman and the risks of a journey his father may or may not have planned for him.

Amazon Reviews

“While Fool’s Errand brings elements of The Maltese Falcon (one of my all-time favorite films), Goodfellas, and even a dash of old-school detective thrillers and serial films, this tale is fully current. It’s a great read and a worthy weekend escape from real life. It doesn’t insult anyone’s beliefs or intelligence. It’s smart, it’s sharp, and it will make a strong movie in the right creative hands. I picked up Fool’s Errand and read it through, cover to cover, in a day. Stephens’ prose is brisk and clean, to the point, and entertaining as it keeps you turning pages. Fool’s Errand is a fun, satisfying read, full of heart and surprises.”  — PJ Media

“Told in the first person, this engaging mystery is both plot-and character-driven. Moving from past to present is deftly handled, and the mystery presented seems both plausible and intriguing. Love of family, albeit a flawed one, is key.”  — Kirkus Reviews

Book Promo: Crimes and Passion

Betrayal and Infidelity Lead to
Murder in Crimes and Passion

by
Jeffrey Stephens

Elizabeth Knoebel expected her appointment that night to provide another juicy entry in her private diary, aptly entitled Sexual Rites. But a shadowy figure, watching from the edge of her property, has other plans. Instead of an evening of pleasure, Elizabeth is confronted by someone who wants to put an end to her destructive behavior — and succeeds.

Crimes and Passion is the gripping mystery-thriller from Jeffrey S. Stephens, effortlessly weaving suspense and sensuality with psychological undercurrents.

Elizabeth’s murder investigation is turned over to Lieutenant Robbie Whyte, a former New York City cop now serving on the force in affluent Fairfield County, Connecticut. Whyte understands that the appearances of the privileged gentry are often far removed from reality, and this certainly proves to be true in the case of Elizabeth Knoebel, who Whyte discovers was under the care of psychotherapist Dr. Randi Conway.

When Whyte finds Elizabeth’s diary, Sexual Rites, he uncovers explicit details of her erotic adventures with various men, many of whom may have been the husbands of the women in her therapy group. Elizabeth was a predator bent on seducing and, in some instances, humiliating these men, obsessed with a perverse mission that Whyte believes led to her murder.

The secrets of Crimes and Passion are peeled away one layer at a time as readers meet an assortment of Dr. Conway’s patients — one of whom may have been Elizabeth’s killer. With Dr. Conway unwilling to betray her patients’ confidences, Whyte’s investigation gets complicated, putting the therapist herself in more danger as Whyte gets closer to the truth, and to the doctor herself.

With a pacing that mirrors Whyte’s frantic search for the truth, Crimes and Passion keeps readers guessing as each revelation unfolds. And along the way, readers are shown glimpses into the dynamics that cause marriages to succeed, to fail or sometimes, to end in tragedy.

Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton

Harper Collins Pub

Michael Crichton, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Jurassic Park, returns to the world of paleontology in this recently discovered novel—a thrilling adventure set in the Wild West during the golden age of fossil hunting.

The year is 1876. Warring Indian tribes still populate America’s western territories even as lawless gold-rush towns begin to mark the landscape. In much of the country it is still illegal to espouse evolution. Against this backdrop two monomaniacal paleontologists pillage the Wild West, hunting for dinosaur fossils, while surveilling, deceiving and sabotaging each other in a rivalry that will come to be known as the Bone Wars.

Into this treacherous territory plunges the arrogant and entitled William Johnson, a Yale student with more privilege than sense. Determined to survive a summer in the west to win a bet against his arch-rival, William has joined world-renowned paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh on his latest expedition.  But when the paranoid and secretive Marsh becomes convinced that William is spying for his nemesis, Edwin Drinker Cope, he abandons him in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a locus of crime and vice. William is forced to join forces with Cope and soon stumbles upon a discovery of historic proportions.  With this extraordinary treasure, however, comes exceptional danger, and William’s newfound resilience will be tested in his struggle to protect his cache, which pits him against some of the West’s most notorious characters.

A page-turner that draws on both meticulously researched history and an exuberant imagination, Dragon Teeth is based on the rivalry between real-life paleontologists Cope and Marsh; in William Johnson readers will find an inspiring hero only Michael Crichton could have imagined. Perfectly paced and brilliantly plotted, this enormously winning adventure is destined to become another Crichton classic.

Book Review: The Thruway Killers by Harvey Havel

Buckle Up For The Thruway Killers: A Rollicking Commentary On Greed, Murder And Mayhem

When values collide and money is thrown in the mix, anything can happen. Author Harvey Havel is back with The Thruway Killers (America Star Books), a delightfully fast-paced crime novel that also points out the absurdities of our times.

Havel does not shrink away from touchy issues of race and religion. Droogan McPhee is the eldest son of a prosperous businessman, and he lacks his father’s sense of propriety and drive to succeed. To his father’s horror, the unemployed, overweight, crack-smoking Droogan becomes romantically entangled with one of the family’s African-American maids. His father uses money to put a wedge between the couple, and Droogan is motivated to act.

A botched murder plot follows, and Droogan and his beloved Angela begin their odyssey up the iconic New York Thruway, pursued by Agent Roderigo Rojas of the FBI and a mercenary named the Spartan. When Droogan slips into a shadowy religious cult, his problems begin to multiply. Havel, with an outsider’s perspective and a keen sense of fun, explores American cultural and political fault lines and whether crossing lines leads to ruin.

Harvey Havel, born in Pakistan with family ties to India, is a prolific writer. His third novel, Freedom of Association, was published in 2006. Other novels include Charlie Zero’s Last-Ditch Attempt, and The Orphan of Mecca, Book One. He is formerly a writing instructor at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey. He also taught writing and literature at the College of St. Rose in Albany as well as SUNY Albany. Copies of his books and short stories, both new and used, may be purchased at and by special order at fine booksellers everywhere.

Praise for The Thruway Killers

Kirkus Reviews: “…Police chases and social commentary come together in this rollicking murder story about an affluent family torn apart by greed, prejudice, and its own foibles….Havel packs a good deal into his novel, which at first glance may appear to be a simple crime story. Themes of interracial or interreligious marriage predominate, from both a black and white perspective…a lot of fun.”

Texas Book Nook: “…wonderfully written and very suspenseful…not for the faint of heart as this one definitely left me looking over my shoulder. Fast paced and filled with surprise moments….”

The Indie Express: “You won’t want to put it down….There were many surprises and the way that Harvey Havel was able to keep the pacing just right really helps everything flow naturally.”

Novel News Network: “I liked the diversity of the novel. It pulls together different elements, all of which are executed well and come together seamlessly….I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed the fact that Harvey Havel was able to surprise me a couple of times. I always like a novel that keeps me guessing.”

Review

“Marie Sutro’s debut novel, Dark Associations, may just be this generation’s Silence of the Lambs. Erotic and frightening, it keeps the reader guessing until the last pages.”
– STEVE ALTEN, New York Times Best-Selling Author of Meg & Domain

“Dark Associations is a crime thriller extraordinaire that offers a deviously devilish mix of madness, murder, and mayhem. Marie Sutro’s finely tuned and polished debut effort channels the best of Thomas Harris, while serving up a serial killer who’d make even Hannibal Lecter blush… Grisly without being gratuitous, Dark Associations is like a literary battering ram, as relentless as it is riveting.”
– JON LAND, USA Today Best-Selling Author of Strong Cold Dead

“Dark Associations is a wickedly compelling debut by Marie Sutro, who presents us with a great cast of characters and a villain who’s as sadistic as they come. This one will keep you guessing right up till the end.”
– SPENCER KOPE, Author of Collecting the Dead
