Book Review: Beale Street Blues by Angela Kay Austin

Beale Street Blues

by Angela Kay Austin

Darling Crawford lost the man she loved to another woman. Returning to her parents was bad enough, but returning home broke, divorced, and jobless is awful. Right about now she just needs to have fun.

A man with a sexy southern drawl. A strong drink. A night of dancing. What happens on Beale Street stays on Beale Street, right?

5 stars  Enjoyable reviewed by TJ7109md
I think the best part of this story is the fact it was about two older (40ish) people and the focus was not placed on the wealth of the male and his saving a poor, struggling female but the personal challenges they either created or faced to be together. I think the age of the primary characters helped present a more mature, relatable story than what other writers are putting out these days. It was not full over the top erotica for one. While the storyline is not new, I like that Darling had doubts and struggled with life after a divorce – her actions were more reflective of reality than what is traditionally presented in a majority of IRR using this same storyline. Great job to this author – first time reading her work but looking forward to future releases.

Dating for Older Singles

Navigating the Dating Scene in the
‘Age of the Selfie’

Certified Life Coach Shares 4 Tips for Older Singles

All the good ones are taken … I’m too old to feel THAT way again … I don’t look as good as I used to … I haven’t accomplished enough at my age … I don’t even know how to flirt anymore …

For older singles hungry for partnership, these common worries can prevent taking the steps that lead to fulfilling relationships, says dating and life coach Deborah Downey. And, of course, the dating scene has changed quite a bit in the past decade alone; younger people meet online and wallpaper their profiles with “selfies.”

“Although the ‘selfie’ is now widely accepted, there are some older singles who are intimidated by what it seems to signify: that we’ve gone from the ‘Age of Aquarius’ to an age of vanity and superficiality,” says Downey, author of “What Are You Worried About!” (http://www.coachdeborahdowney.com/).

“It’s one thing to be self-actualized and self-enriched; it’s another to be self-absorbed.”

For older singles looking to date — and more, there’s plenty to feel optimistic about, says Downey, who found romance later in life after her husband passed away. Despite living with multiple sclerosis for 25 years, she says, she’s happy and fulfilled.

There are more singles than ever age 40 and older that are looking for love. Downey offers tips for the older single looking for a meaningful and lasting connection.

•  Ignore ego-based doubts. It’s easy to idealize memories of dating when you were younger, perhaps in better shape and more energetic. But most likely, your younger self was also scared of not being “good enough” and was probably not as self-actualized as who you are today. Don’t fall for the ego doubts of your youth; embrace your maturity, part of which includes accepting who you are in any situation. If that is difficult, consider this period in your life as an opportunity to improve self-acceptance.

•  Know your target and have fun! Dating takes time and effort, so don’t go into it blind. You may want to specify your preferences, such as “non-smoker” or “financially independent” or “health conscious.” Once on your date, remember that you’re supposed to be having fun, nerves notwithstanding. The best way to gauge whether the date is going well is to take note of whether you’re actually enjoying yourself.

•  Internet dating is legit. The stigma against meeting dates online has all but lifted. You’ll want to represent yourself fairly and accurately in a profile. Don’t go blank and write an overly simple profile; tell a good, positive story about a small victory during childhood or talk about your bucket list. Forget about clichés like wine tastings or hobbies, avoid poor spelling and make sure your photo is current. Don’t try to be “cool” or clever; just be real. When meeting someone, use common sense: take it slow, be wary of scams, meet in a public place and so on.

•  Consider the sensibilities of your date. After a few successful dates, remember that men and women share universal sensibilities. Men and women both like to be complimented, admired and appreciated. Everyone wants to feel important. Specifically, men like it when women suggest doing something together that he will like, such as going fishing or to a sporting event. Women generally appreciate being encouraged to express their feelings, and when men share their own feelings.

“Above all, be comfortable and in touch with your inner self and you’ll be more likely to be ‘lucky in love,’ ” Downey says.

Book Review: Housebroken by Charmaine Gordon

Housebroken: A River’s Edge Romantic Suspense

An Amusing Look at an Empty Nest

Charmaine Gordon gives us a wonderful novella about couple who have just achieved empty nest status. Steve and Sally Atwood decide it’s their time to live, they’re still young enough to begin a perpetual honeymoon in a new, smaller home in a community suited for them and not for a young family. Everything is going well, they find the home of their dreams, their passion is as good as it’s ever been (better even without the interruptions), and their new neighbors are definitely their kind of people.

But there are unexpected hurdles – Steve and Sally face them head on and together.

The story is a quick and refreshing read. Ms. Gordon’s writing allows the reader to share in the joy of planning, the trepidation from set-backs, and cheer as they move forward from their old life. As half of a long-time married couple about to embark on our perpetual honeymoon, I truly enjoyed this story; it gave me lots of hope, laughter and a sense of adventure. I recommend it for all.

Chatting with Charmaine Gordon…

Charmaine -10 sATURATED_pp8x10g-72yToday we welcome my bff and fellow VHP author Charmaine Gordon. Charmaine’s books are all fantastic stories about women who Survive and Thrive, and the journey through is completely enthralling. Charmaine has also written a Mature Romance series which proves that we are never too old for love and passion. I highly recommend ALL of Ms. Gordon’s books, they are filled with humor, emotion, inspiration and a refreshing brand of happy-ever-afters. Thanks so much for joining me here in the Potpourri Parlor.

Hi Chelle. I’m delighted to visit with you today. We’ve had many fun twists and turns since meeting about five years ago on a rainy Friday night at Barnes & Noble in the Palisades Mall, no customers and no air conditioning on that stifling evening. I had one book, you had eight. I was a newbie and you were a woman of the writing world. Humbled I listened and learned.

Tell us about your favorite character from your books

I write about women who survive and thrive so there are many characters I love. All of them qualify as my fave so I’ll tell you about Joy Davison from my latest book, Farewell, Hello or rather, Joy speaks for herself.

“Hi, I’m Joy coming to you right from the pages of Farewell Hello. Born in Chicago, Illinois, my real story begins in 1948 when I met a senior, the most popular boy in high school, and Mother said, “Don’t allow privileges” and I didn’t know what she meant. Danny and I fell in love and now two years later, he’s furious with me and just hung up the phone from his base at San Antonio, Texas where he’s about to graduate from pilot school.

I’m crying staring at my sparkling diamond ring on the third finger of my left hand. I had to postpone our wedding because Mother is suddenly sick with something called Multiple Sclerosis and the doctor says she may not live long. Father says family comes first and since I’m the daughter, I have to take care of sweet Mother. I know in my heart Danny and I will find each other. The main concern is the war in Korea. Little did I know then, there were many obstacles to overcome more than a war.”

What was your first sale as an author?

That’s easy. I bought a copy of To Be Continued and gave it to my daughter. I don’t think she’s read my first book. I’ve signed an option for a television movie with a production company, have had many wonderful reviews. She loves me and has my book tucked in next to her bed, unread. No biggie.

Where do you do your research?

Google is the go-to for research; fast and easy. As for my husband, he knows I’m doing something in my small office besides not making dinner yet he prefers no-fiction and has never looked at even Page One of any of the fifteen stories I’ve written. Again, no biggie. . .but someday, POW! Right in the kisser.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your books?

It’s a solitary pre-occupation where fictional characters talk to you. As an actor, I was accustomed to applause and standing ovations once in a while and people hugging me in the streets. And now the characters I’ve brought to life yearn for the same applause and hugging. My fictional characters never let me go, They reach out calling, “Me, me, one more time.” Very cool.

Do you hear from your readers? What kinds of questions do they ask?

Yes, sometimes. They thank me and wonder how I knew about loss and recovery and how to move on using humor to get through each day. I tell them once you’ve had so many experiences, it’s not all that difficult.

What was the scariest moment of your life?

The sudden death of my mother and then later my first husband. I didn’t know how to reconcile a world without them. Face it, I did. A hurdle to overcome alone. Sink or swim and I became a strong swimmer against an almost overwhelming tide.

What is your favorite meal?

I do love broiled salmon, risotto rice, steamed spinach topped off with my favorite dessert, crème brulee.

Do you have any suggestions for beginning writers? If so, what are they?

If you really want to write, I say write. Find time every day to write without censoring your words for about twenty minutes. Only then, reread. You might be surprised at what you see. Tell your story, claim it for your own in your own voice and when and if you’ve told the whole story, polished like a jewel, find a home for it. Best wishes from someone who knows.

What hobbies do you actively pursue?

I walk and stretch every day but best of all I hang out with my six year old granddaughter. She brings joy and fun every time we’re together. We climb up into the highest part of her play yard and talk about important things like boys, math, sports, and nasty girls. We also sing and make up stories. I plan to live to about 100 and ten, minimum. There are many ideas I must share with her.

What makes you happy?

Waking up is a plus; writing, creating a new story another plus. World peace is an unfulfilled dream so I fear we citizens have little say in the outcome of this and that war. I say ENOUGH, you selfish fools, but no one listens. The best I hope for is a good life for us and our children

Thanks, dear Chelle for inviting me to be your guest today.

No Time for Green Bananas, words to live by
as reviewed by Chelle Cordero

You are never too weathered to learn how to love again. Despite her losses, young age, and past regrets, Celeste learns how to fall in love when she meets a younger man, Paul. As if they had known each other forever they find things they have in common as well as a mutual attraction. Hiking mountains and conquering inhibitions, Celeste is warmed by Paul’s encouragement and zest for life. The author uses humor, compassion, spicy love scenes, and endearing friendships to paint a very realistic and intriguing story.

This tale of bittersweet memories and truly living for today captured this reader – No Time for Green Bananas becomes more than a phrase, it becomes a mantra to live by and a lesson not to waste time on uncertainties. As always, Charmaine Gordon has delivered a fantastic read.

About Charmaine Gordon

Charmaine Gordon writes books about women who Survive and Thrive. Her motto is take one step and then another to leave your past behind and begin again. Six books and several short stories in three years, she’s always at work on the next story. The books include To Be Continued, Starting Over, Now What?, Reconstructing Charlie, Sin of Omission and The Catch, just released.

“I didn’t realize at the time while working as an actor in NYC, I’d become a sponge soaking up dialogue, setting, and stage directions. I learned many tools of writing during the years watching directors like Mike Nichols and actors including Harrison Ford, Anthony Hopkins, and Billy Crystal. And would you believe, I was Geraldine Ferraro’s stand-in leg model, my first job giving me entrée into all the Unions needed to work. When the sweet time ended, I began another career and creative juices flowed.”

Charmaine’s latest project is a series of shorts about Mature Romances. Her novel To Be Continued has been optioned for film by Willy Gilly Productions in Orange County NY.
