Book Review: The Kingdom of the Sun and Moon

The Kingdom of the Sun and Moon

by Lowell H. Press

The König is a tyrant. His subjects are starving. And all-out war is fast approaching. Will a pair of young, courageous brothers save their kingdom? When an emissary sent by the König himself stops by the remote mouse colony of Long Meadow, the peaceful life Sommer and Nesbit have shared is turned upside down-and the brothers are catapulted into separate death-defying adventures. Sommer, levelheaded and clever, is ordered to the palace to join the König’s illustrious Eagle Guard as it prepares to face a full-scale invasion by the nefarious Emperor Wolfsmilch and his army of a hundred thousand forest mice. Meanwhile, the small but spirited Nesbit is banished to the Forest of Lost Life for insulting the König, and must dodge hungry predators at every turn. The brothers struggle to reunite and defy the oppressors who threaten everyone and everything they have ever known and loved. But time is quickly running out for both of them-and the fate of the kingdom hinges on one last, daring mission. Set against the magnificent backdrop of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria, The Kingdom of the Sun and Moon is an action-packed adventure story for young readers and adults alike. Ages 10 and up.

5 Stars

Exciting Story in a Magical Setting reviewed by M. R. Campbell
Lowell H. Press has written an inventive novel about a hierarchy of mice living in the gardens and secret interior spaces of a castle inspired by the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria.

The colony’s king cares little for his subjects and is mostly interested in taking the food they save throughout the year for his own use during the winter months. Two brothers, Sommer and Nesbit, discover that all is not what it seems, including the king’s purported fear of a pending invasion of the colony by a massive army of woodland mice.

Sommer, who is drafted by the king’s minions for a suicide mission on the colony’s behalf and Nesbit, who insults the king and flees into the dangerous forest, take different approaches to survival and justices. Sommer becomes a cadet commander, while Nesbit becomes known as either a worker of magic of an exceptionally lucky mouse.

Set in a 1700s world, “The Kingdom of the Sun and Moon” is a delightful story with well-drawn characters and an underlying culture and myth that will delight young readers while keeping their parents engaged whenever this derring-do yarn is shared around the dinner table or at at bedtime.

Press used his visit to the Schönbrunn Palace to great advantage in developing a setting for his story that is well suited to the mice colony’s culture and history as well as to the people and cats who appear through the tale for better or worse.

Sommer and Nesbit of the Long Meadow Colony are tiny, as mice go, but they make up for it in bravery and guile.

Jock Stewart Strikes Back

by Malcolm R. Campbell

Since modern-day journalism is going to hell in a hand basket and/or nowhere fast, Jock Stewart strikes back by categorizing news events as satirical, outlandish, strange or political. Nonetheless, according to informed sources, the use of this volume as a journalism textbook has not been authorized anywhere the world is right as rain.

Where does Jock Stewart Strikes Back rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is very unique. I found it very entertaining so I’d have to rank it right up there with the best of all audio books I have listened to.

What other book might you compare Jock Stewart Strikes Back to and why?

I don’t know of any book I can compare it to.

What about Barry Newman’s performance did you like?

I think Mr. Newman did an excellent job. He walked you through the story with great execution. His diction was amazing and his dialects were spot on. I give him a standing ovation.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Breaking News

Any additional comments?

I hope there will be another Jock Stewart book coming out with Mr. Newman narrating. I will be quick to purchase it.

Jock Stewart Strikes Back

by Malcolm R. Campbell

Stewart, who served diligently as the protagonist in Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of Fire, refutes charges that he was raised by alligators or hyenas. When he was a young boy, his dear old daddy said, “Jock, everyone but you and me is scum and I’m not sure about you.”

That proverb opened Jock’s eyes to the realities of the world, primarily that everything is worse than it seems: the small-town newspaper, the Star-Gazer, is allegedly run by fools and buffoons; the Junction City, Texas, government is allegedly corrupt and inept.

Jock Stewart Strikes Back audiobook edition is narrated by Barry Newman, professional voice artist and producer,  residing in Florida. Barry has come to the audiobook industry after years  of both writing and voicing radio and TV commercials, and has this to say about his work:  “I truly enjoy reading a well written story and because of my background I am always thinking about what the listener is hearing. Putting myself in that position I must admit that many times I stop in the middle of a paragraph or sentence asking myself ‘Would I want to hear it that way?’ – from the review above, we’re sure listeners will give him a resounding YES.

June Is Audiobook Month facts from the Audio Publishers Association

Audiobook Industry Facts: June Is Audiobook Month

  • In a recent consumer survey, the Audio Publishers Association learned that 25% of Americans had listened to an audiobook in the last year.
  • Audiobook listeners are avid readers who use audiobooks as a way of enjoying an author’s work when they are not able to read. 94% of audiobook listeners had read a book in the past year vs. 70% of non-audiobook listeners.
  • Many fellow authors love audiobooks. Scott Turow, Janet Evanovich, Judy Blume, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Tom Wolfe, Lisa Scottoline — all listen to audiobooks.
  • Many of them are taking to their social media networks today as part of June Is Audiobook Month. They will discuss their experiences and love of audio, as well as projects they’ve worked on or some on the horizon.
  • Most listeners use audiobooks in the car (whether they are commuting or on driving vacations) but an increasing number of people also report using audiobooks while they are exercising, cooking, gardening — and even at work.
  • The average audiobook listener spends about 5 hours a week listening.
  • Audiobooks are great for family listening on the road this summer–nothing ends the “are we there yet blues!” like a great audiobook. Audiobooks keep everyone in the car entertained while also increasing literacy skills…families can even knock out a few of the titles on a kid’s summer reading list on the way to vacation.
  • Audiobooks are a great tool for building literacy. Teachers and librarians report that listening to audiobooks helps children build better vocabularies and also helps them to read with better expression.

The fictional news stories and “Night Beat” editorial columns in this collection began as posts on the “Morning Satirical News” weblog and subsequently appeared in the Worst of Jock Stewart and/or the “Jock Talks” series of e-books. Jock Talks…Politics was a 2013 Pushcart Prize nominee.

Production Notes

Jock Stewart Strikes Back is narrated and produced by Barry Newman, Florida. Barry’s career in media and journalism, including voice work in radio and TV commercials, lends a unique ‘Jock-ness’ to the production, and we look forward to working with him again in the future.

Book Review: Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of Fire

Mainstream humor with a dash of mystery… A throwback to Hollywood’s film noir reporters, Jock Stewart is out of touch with the looming world of digital journalism.

While he goes out of his way to mock those in authority by pretending to kowtow to them, he admits he does his best work by “being an asshole.” A mix of Don Rickles and Don Quixote, Stewart is the man for the job when the skirts are up and the chips are down…

Hard-boiled reporter Jock Stewart wakes up on the morning after the Star-Gazer office party with a hangover and an old flame in his bed and he cuddles up with the mayor’s wife in the back seat of a 1953 Desoto. Between these defining moments, he investigates the theft of the mayor’s race horse Sea of Fire and the murder of his publisher’s girl friend, Bambi Hill.

Stewart discovers the truth for his news stories via an interview style based on lies, pretense and audacious behavior…

Fast-moving & Fun read. It’s Film Noir for the 21st century

reviewed by Elise Skidmore
The story is as interesting as its title suggests. How does a Sea of Fire go missing? Easily enough if it’s the name of a race horse. Jock Stewart is an old school journalism kind of reporter, cut from the same cloth as Sam Spade and other film noir types. He’s got sarcasm oozing from every pore, and as often as not, it gets him into lots of trouble with just about everyone, which makes for lots of plot twists and turns. Plenty of memorable characters reside in Jock’s home town, like a perpetually doughnut-eating cop by the name of Kruller. Those kind of little word plays and the intentional use of old clichés will make you laugh out loud. Jock projects himself as a hard core kind of guy, but deep down he’s a softie. If you’re looking for something different to entertain you, check out Jock Stewart and the Missing Sea of FIre.
