Expert Speaker On PTSD Discusses
US Air Force One-Day Operational Pause To Help
Curb Increased Suicide Rates In Military Personnel

From World War I through the present, the United States has neglected to provide adequate transition support to millions of veterans leaving military service. Instead of meaningful jobs, access to quality healthcare and education, and fair and equitable housing, what our veterans find when they return home is a new battle — against a failed bureaucracy that has let them down for the past 100 years.

As a nation, our misguided perception is that GI Joe and Jane can simply return home and pick up right where they left off. In truth, the military member who deployed overseas is often markedly different than the one coming home.  The Joe and Jane who joined the military in the first place are gone, and they’re not coming back.

After months or years in highly structured organizational environments, often with deployments and horrific battlefield experiences, many military veterans have undergone paradigm shifts in their thinking, their character, and in the way they view themselves and others.

In his compelling new book, Moving Past PTSD: Consciousness, Understanding, and Appreciation for Military Veterans and Their Families, expert speaker and retired Lieutenant Colonel Jaime B. Parent tackles many issues facing our nation’s veterans, including mental illness, unemployment, discrimination, and many other challenges related to transitioning to civilian life. Using thought-provoking interviews with veterans, caregivers and family members, Lt. Col. Parent hopes to break the relentless cycle of misunderstanding that prevents far too many veterans from successfully reintegrating themselves into family lives and careers. Moving Past PTSD aims to change our understanding of who the 21st century veteran is. Through this understanding, we can change their lives — and the lives of those who love them — for the better.

Author Jaime B. Parent is a retired Lieutenant Colonel, Lt. Col. Jaime B. ParentBiomedical Science Corps, United States Air Force.

DISCOVERING YOUR OWN DOCTOR WITHIN

by Dr. Amy E. Coleman

Be Your Best Self:  your symptoms can be both a mask and a set of clues

In “Discovering Your Own Doctor Within,” Dr. Amy E. Coleman shares a collection of true patient encounters over a 3-year time span that uncovers and reflects the sacred relationship between patient and physician.

Dr. Coleman says doctors are often encouraged to see more patients an hour than is healthy for either the doctor or the patient. What is missed is the true story behind the symptoms, which, if given time to surface in an environment of trust, can save thousands of dollars on unnecessary labs and imaging.

“We as physicians must see the patient across from us as our own selves, and the heart-filled compassion that develops from that is a force all its own,” Dr. Coleman said. “From this place, something happens to both the doctor and patient that is transformative and transcendent.”

Dr. Coleman says that patients will have much more success in finding their truest form of wellness when they follow their intuition and invest in a doctor that allows their best self to come forward, not just the doctor assigned to them under their insurance umbrella coverage for primary care.

“There truly can be a perfect relationship, based on love and compassion, all within the imperfect world that we all live,” Dr. Coleman said. “These connections made in a clinic setting can often be just the ‘medicine’ needed.”

Book Review: Red Kool-Aid, Blue Kool Aid by Leonard A Zwelling, MD, MBA

Red Kool Aid Blue Kool Aid: What Really Happened To The Promise Of Obamacare

For better or worse, the Affordable Care Act will be an important piece of Barack Obama’s legacy. Leonard Zwelling, MD, sheds light on little-known details of perhaps one of the most controversial legislative efforts during Obama’s term in office in Red Kool Aid Blue Kool Aid:  How Partisan Politics and Greed Undermined ObamaCare (Franklin Scribes Publishers).

Red Kool Aid Blue Kool Aid is the dizzying memoir of Dr. Zwelling’s experience on Capitol Hill as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation health policy fellow, struggling to bring some medicine and science to a highly politicized environment of big money and bigger politics. In the process, the details of the city of Washington, DC and its Byzantine operation are revealed. The forces influencing legislation are never discussed on the TV news shows and rarely in the press at all, he points out.

Leonard Zwelling, MD, MBA, is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. He has cared for patients and done laboratory research for most of his 40+ year medical career. He was also a medical administrator, overseeing the largest infrastructure for cancer research in the world for more than ten years as the Vice President for Research Administration at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Additionally, he was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation health policy fellow serving on the minority staff of the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Dr. Zwelling is currently an author, speaker, teacher and consultant.

Reviews

Richard Andrassy, Amazon.com reviewer: “This is the educational experience of an exceptionally well trained and respected physician thrown into the ‘reality’ of Washington politics. As physicians, we try to go from the large differential diagnosis to the most likely cause as fast as possible. Not true in Law or Politics. I learned a lot about the games in Washington by reading this book. I think it will be eye opening to many physicians. We aren’t considered big players in Washington and we are surely not organized within our own ranks. This book is not only educational, but easy to read and keeps your attention. Whether you are Red or Blue or ‘in-between,’ you will enjoy the candid report of a physician’s year on the Hill.  Entertaining, enlightening and exasperating.”

John F. Mills, Amazon.com reviewer: “Finally the truth…Dr. Zwelling uncovers the theme of the forces in play that gave birth to ObamaCare…money and petit politics had more to do with the bill than did improving the state of health care in America. Furthermore, the way legislation is supposed to be passed was subverted and most of the legislators apparently never even read the bill. It’s here. It’s clear. It’s frightening.”

Book Review: Stay Fit Seniors Saving Seniors Baby Boomers and America’s Healthcare Costs

Stay Fit Seniors Saving Seniors Baby Boomers
and America’s Healthcare Costs

by Dr. Roger Russo & Dr. Anthony Lauro

Empowering Seniors

Dr. Russo uses his own life experiences to explain how he and his friend and business partner Dr. Lauro came up with the plan for Stay Fit Seniors; his explanation really made an impact on me when he talked of his own parents’ early demise – We have to take responsibility for our own health and not expect others to do it for us. There is a team approach which includes Self care, Help care and Crisis care; Self care and Help care are preventative, what you can do for yourself and a medical/professional team which includes regular medical care, nutritionists, therapists, chiropractors, trainers and life coaches.

Russo and Lauro have created a program which addresses the specific needs of seniors and baby boomers. they emphasize the need for movement, building bone and muscle mass, getting enough sleep and following a wise nutritional plan. The Senior Fit Circuit Training Centers offer stations which  help participants improve circulation and exercises one to two muscle groups each. Movement is critical to help maintain health and youth. The book is inspiring and educational and the program is encouraging and fulfilling.

from Amazon:

This book will help any senior keep fit, better their diet and avoid life-threatening diabetes, obesity and heart disease. With America’s healthcare system more costly than ever before, purchasing a copy of ‘Stay Fit Seniors: Saving Seniors, Baby Boomers and America’s Healthcare Costs’ could literally save readers’ lives.

It’s a shocking yet unsurprising fact; the United States spends more of its GDP on healthcare than any other nation in the world. While millions turn to the Government for answers, New York’s Dr. Roger A. Russo and Dr. Anthony Lauro are urging Americans, especially seniors, to point their fingers back at themselves and take responsibility for their poor lifestyle choices. In a bold effort to help older Americans improve their health, longevity and ultimately their country’s healthcare system.

Stay Fit Seniors: Saving Seniors, Baby Boomers and America’s Healthcare Costs’ is the latest addition to Dr.s Russo and Lauro’s famed Stay Fit Seniors® brand…

Chapters cover a myriad of topics including an exposé’ of U.S. healthcare, nutrition and vitamins needed for optimum health, in-depth analysis of popular supplements and drugs, why senior health is a shared responsibility and much, much more.

Dr. Lauro believes that the book has wide and far-reaching appeal.

“It should be a priority read for seniors, baby boomers, caretakers, potential caretakers, healthcare professionals and even insurance companies who want to increase health and lower costs. Its part investigative-style overview of the U.S. healthcare system and part self-help book; the only title of its kind currently on the market,” he adds.

In the book you will learn how the fitness legend Jack LaLanne became the national spokes person for Stay Fit Seniors in it’s start up years. Elaine LaLanne is quoted as saying, “Jack LaLanne always stressed ‘Life is great when you’re in shape.’ That statement is as true today as it was when he coined it over 60 years ago. Drs. Russo and Lauro have advocated his philosophy through their Stay Fit Seniors® Program. Both Jack and I applauded their efforts in the past and I want to wish them continued success.”
