About the author, in her own words:

AvatarI am a coach, a pretty good one too according to my lovely clients. What makes me really happy is to help you to become the best version of yourself, and to sustain it. I do that either with my brain training or with my biomechanics and Pilates coaching or often with a bit of both. I am not a normal coach, I can’t be faffed sitting in an office so I work with clients outside or remotely. I don’t do ‘wafty’ either, something probably very obvious from the title of one of my books!

So, how did I become a Life Coach? I’d spent years developing Equestrian Pilates and although it is a physical activity, it became clear that the brain can have a huge impact on the body. Also, for a long time I was not a very happy, nor confident, person. Not being confident made me miserable so I set off on a mission to change that. I dabbled in Sports Psychology but the focus was often on things that had happened in the past. You cannot go back and change things so I decided to focus more on the here and now, and the future too.

As a serial studier, I added a huge range of qualifications to my already extensive list including:
Life Coach
Positive Psychology
Law of Attraction
Emotional Intelligence
Life Purpose Coach
Mindfulness
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

My books are easy to read, I stay away from fancy-pants language and terminology – for goodness sakes, you want to read a book not have to stop and google what something means every five minutes.

In my personal life I am an animal lover and have horses and dogs…which is probably why I do a lot of remote work with clients so that they don’t have to see/smell how filthy I am 99% of the day! But, it makes me happy and that is what life is all about.

Hope that was helpful, look forward to sharing more of my work with you soon.

Book Review: The Empath’s Survival Guide by Judith Orloff, MD

Being an empath is hard. Most don’t understand what you are experiencing and even some of those who have the empath trait are so busy hiding it because they don’t understand their own reactions and are often embarrassed by others when they talk about it.

That’s why it is so refreshing to read Judith Orloff’s book “The Empath’s Survival Guide — Life Strategies for Sensitive People”. As both an empath herself and a psychiatrist Dr. Orloff has the unique ability to inform, reassure and counsel/advise others who are faced with the dilemma of being sensitives in an insensitive world.

I was interested to learn about the different types of Empath’s, this makes understanding each other so much easier. Her recommendations how to respond to sensitives/empaths whether you are peers, intimates, or even parents of young children, are extremely helpful. Most of all I appreciated her suggestions about shielding so empaths can protect themselves from a bombardment of negativity and eventual burn-out.

The Empath’s Survival Guide is worthwhile reading for everyone, empath or not. Dr. Orloff uses repetition to enforce some valuable lessons and manages to use the technique well. Aside from the obvious help it provides for sensitive people, it can guide everyone towards a better understanding and an easier coexistence with the empaths we encounter daily.

The Empath’s Survival Guide —
Life Strategies for Sensitive People
by Judith Orloff, MD

What is the difference between having empathy and being an empath? “Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain,” says Dr. Judith Orloff “But for empaths it goes much farther We actually feel others’ emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have.” With The Empath’s Survival Guide, Dr. Orloff offers an invaluable resource to help sensitive people develop healthy coping mechanisms in our high-stimulus world—while fully embracing the empath’s gifts of intuition, creativity, and spiritual connection.

In this practical and empowering book for empaths and their loved ones, Dr. Orloff begins with self-assessment exercises to help you understand your empathic nature, then offers potent strategies for protecting yourself from overwhelm and replenishing your vital energy For any sensitive person who’s been told to “grow a thick skin,” here is your lifelong guide for staying fully open while building resilience, exploring your gifts of deep perception, raising empathic children, and feeling welcomed and valued by a world that desperately needs what you have to offer.

Summer’s Over – Back to Our Busy Lives

How to Recover Like a Younger You
Remember Your 20s? Food Science Expert Shares
5 Nutrients That Help You Feel Younger

While barbecues, sports leagues, family vacations, days at the beach and nights out with friends are fun, keeping up with summer recreation while maintaining a steady work schedule can be challenging, says Budge Collinson.

And before we know it, we’ll be back into the busy fall grind, getting kids up and off to school, participating in clubs and civic groups that have been on summer hiatus, and yes, before we know it, planning for holidays!

“We like to tell ourselves that there will be a period of rest before the next big thing, but usually there isn’t,” says Collinson, a food science expert with a passion for health and fitness. “The truth is, most of us like having full and often fast-paced lives, even if we tend to get worn out more quickly as we get older.”

Don’t resort to caffeine and other stimulants for a temporary energy boost, Collinson says.

“Replacing the nutrients that are depleted when you’re active is a much smarter way to maintain or increase your energy level, and many of those nutrients have long-term benefits as well,” says Collinson, who formulated an effervescent, natural multivitamin beverage called Youth Infusion, (www.drinkyouthinfusion.com), to make it easier to get all the essential nutrients and minerals in one 6-ounce drink.

He discusses the revitalizing powers of specific nutrients:

•  CoQ10 for that extra energy boost. Every cell in your body uses CoQ10 to produce energy, but your heart needs it the most. CoQ10 can help balance your blood pressure, and its powerful antioxidant properties help protect you against pre-mature aging.

•  Arginine to help with your endurance during workouts and your daily routine. Arginine helps the cardiovascular system by assisting in nitric oxide production, making the arteries more elastic. It also supports the functioning of your hormones and immune system, helps kidneys remove the body’s waste and promotes wound healing.

•  Theanine helps support better moods. Theanine is a calming extract of green tea. Clinical research indicates that it helps focus a distracted mind. To a lesser extent, theanine has also been shown to reduce anxiety.

•  Resveratrol: a versatile antioxidant for general well-being and long-term peace of mind. Resveratrol promotes healthy circulation, prevents cholesterol oxidation and protects your entire cardiovascular system from the effects of dangerous free radicals. Initial research shows resveratrol helps defend the body against a number of diseases, including Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

•  Vitamin D – for when the sun isn’t as bright as it was during summer. Up to 90 percent of the vitamin D the body needs comes from sunlight, which is in much shorter supply after summer. Vitamin D is required for the regulation of the calcium and phosphorus in the body. It also plays an important role in maintaining proper bone structure and supporting immunity.

Earth Day Awareness

4 Great Green Technologies to
Celebrate Earth Day

Environmental Advocate Shares Affordable Gadgets
that Shrink Your Footprint – and Your Bills

Just as intended, the 44th annual celebration of Earth Day is surrounded by talk of our environment, our impact on it and what we can do to better live in harmony with it.

“We’re seeing more and more people who realize that, if each of us does what we can every day,  collectively, we can have a tremendous impact,” says Lynda Chervil, a thought leader and green technology advocate whose new book, “Fool’s Return,” (http://lyndachervil.com/), mirrors real-life efforts to develop sustainable energy sources.

“All the people carrying reusable grocery sacks, people who’ve quit the plastic water bottle habit, folks heating their pools or houses with solar panels – that’s what we should be celebrating this Earth Day.”

This year’s March Gallup Environment poll found that 42 percent of Americans believe the outlook for the environment has improved, up from only 26 percent in 2008.

Chervil, who studies the science behind green technology, says environmental awareness has ramped up production of affordable goods that can shrink individuals’ carbon footprints. She shares four devices she says would make a nice gift for Mother Earth on her day:

•  HybridLight Solar Flashlight:  These flashlights never need batteries, can be charged from any light source, and they always work. The 120 lumens model will burn for eight hours on one charge. HybridLight’s flashlights are so reliable, the Boy Scouts’ Utah National Parks Council endorse them – and they come with a lifetime guarantee. For every 10 hours of use, 100 HybridLight flashlights avert 60 pounds of toxic battery landfill waste. An added very cool note – HybridLights has a mission to light up corners of the world with little or no electricity. Recently, the company supplied everyone in a Kenyan village with their own flashlight.  Cost: Prices start at less than $20.

•  Bedol Water Alarm Clock: Imagine a water-powered alarm clock that’s loud enough to scare you out of bed! Bedol’s water clocks run strictly on tap water – no batteries, no nothing else. The energy comes from a natural reaction between the water and two metal plates. The smallest clocks in the line run for six to 12 weeks before the display begins to fade, indicating that the water needs to be changes. Occasionally, you also need to clean the metal plates with vinegar. Just in time for Earth Day, Bedol is launch it’s 12-by-15-inch wall-mount water clock! Cost: Prices start at $19.

•  iGo Green Power Smart Wall:  We’ve all heard of the “vampires” in our homes that suck up power whether we’re using them or not – everything from coffee pots to laptops. Stem the bleeding with this surge protector that cuts the suck by up to 85 percent. The unit, which plugs into the wall, has four outlets, two of which are always on. The other two automatically power down when the attached appliance is not in use. Cost: Prices start at about $12.

•  Pama Eco Navigator Satellite Navigation system:  This GPS system also saves gasoline by providing you with the most energy-efficient routes to your destinations, and feedback on your car’s performance, so you can adjust your driving habits to improve your gas mileage. It also saves all your routes, so you can assess their fuel efficiency. Cost: Watch for pricing and availability on Amazon.

“Most of these items are not only budget priced, they save you money in batteries, electricity and fuel,” Chervil says. “Not only are you doing something great for the planet when you use green technology, you’re taking a load off your wallet.”
