Happy Mother’s Day Weekend

Just wanted to wish y’all a
Happy Mother’s Day

There are always mixed feeling to such an observance for those of us who are blessed to be moms and for those of us who remember the gentle nurturing of our own mothers.
So I say thank you to my mom who passed away in 1979, the lessons she taught have carried me through life and I only hope that I have been able to emulate some of her mommy-ness for my own offspring. ~  I also remember my husband’s mom and want to say thank you to her for raising such a fine son. I am blessed with wonderful memories of strong and capable women who knew how to let their children know they were loved.
And speaking of blessings, I have the most beautiful of all – my daughter and my son and their chosen mates. I thrill each time one of them calls me Mom. And I marvel at the two babies I coddled and how they have grown to be absolutely fantastic adults. I love them for being my “babies” and I admire them for their accomplishments and talents.
But enough about my boasting…
This weekend also makes me think
What is a mom?
It isn’t necessarily genetics or even gender anymore. A MOM is someone who nurtures and loves, a MOM is selfless and devoted, a MOM can give magical kisses and at least for a while is thought to know all the answers. Most of all, a MOM doesn’t lose herself and yet her kids become her world. Being a mom is a great state of being.
So for all the nurturers, all the caregivers, all the huggers and all the confidants, I hope you enjoy your day with your little ones, with your fur-babies, and with the partner who helped make you a mom. (And if you are lucky enough to have your mom around, enjoy.)
Being a mom is one of the best feelings
in the world!

A Parent’s Joy & Final Sin

During a private moment between Jake and Julie in the novel Final Sin, Jake tells Julie how he didn’t live up to his mother’s expectations. Julie suggests that his mom just likes to complain but that she loves her children anyway.
Isn’t that was a parent is supposed to do? Love their children and to kvell (Yiddish, “to be delighted”, “bursting with pride”) over every milestone and accomplishment. A child doesn’t have to win every competition or accomplish the seemingly impossible to earn his parents’ praise and love.
Parents can take joy in every birthday, graduation (even from grade school), every time their daughter is on stage even if it is not a lead role, a new job, a new home, a marriage,… every little thing that is not so little to the parent watching an offspring blossom. Parents simply enjoy watching a child grow.
It should never be about a competition, a comparison, or winning – every time a child shows a personal best, it is a huge accomplishment; every milestone in a child’s life is to be celebrated; every recognition is to be applauded. When all is said and done, the joy and happiness is a parents’ privilege.
“Tell me more about you.  I want to know you.”  She spread her hand against his chest.  “Tell me what you were like as a child.  What’s your family like?”
He shrugged slightly.  “I was just an ordinary boy, nothing special.”
“I don’t believe that.  There is certainly nothing ordinary about you now.”
“Nobody expected anything great out of me.  At least I didn’t let them down.”
“I think you are underestimating yourself.  I think you are kind of great.”
He gave her shoulders a gentle squeeze.  “My parents weren’t thrilled when I got together with Helen.  They thought I was, well, thinking with the wrong brain.”  Jake sighed.  “I think they were surprised when I decided to work towards my degree anyway.”
Julie yawned.  “Oh, I’m sorry. That was rude.”
            “You need your sleep.”
“No, I want to hear about you.”  She was fighting to stay awake.  “How did they feel when you got divorced?  Did your folks like her?”
“I don’t really know how my dad felt, he never really said.  Maybe he was just too busy letting my mom do the talking… I embarrassed her, I was the first to get divorced in the family.  I don’t think my mother liked her, she just felt that once I was married, I should have stayed that way.”
            “Is your sister married?”
“Well… that was another reason for my mom to complain.  My sister has a partner, a same sex partner.”  His mother’s lament was having a son who couldn’t keep a wife and a daughter who didn’t choose a man.  “My sister and her partner came out, they’re lesbians.”  Jake wondered if he was just trying to see how Julie would react to that.  She didn’t flinch.
She looked up at him in the darkened shadows.  “And your parents didn’t approve?  How about you?”
“I guess I was a little uncomfortable at first, I had never known anyone, really known that is, who was… homosexual.”  He shifted a bit.  “But then I went out to visit them, they live in California, and they are really happy together.  Maggie makes my sister really happy and that’s important to me.”
“That’s good.”  She sounded like she was beginning to drift off.  “Everyone should have a good person to love.”
Jake held her close to him.  He thought about the disappointment he was to his mother and father.  And he thought about his ex-wife and how different she was from Julie.  Jake wondered briefly how different his life might have been if he had met Julie first.  Right, he thought, then he’d probably be in jail for child molestation!
Then he thought about how special Julie made him feel.  Jake realized that he had never really spent a lot of time thinking about how he felt, he just did the things he had to do each day.  Since meeting Julie, though, he did think about how good it felt to be with her, to hear her voice and how everything seemed to fit in place when she was around.
“Your mom probably just likes to complain.  I bet she really loves both of her kids.”  When she spoke again, she sounded like she was almost asleep.  “And Helen is just a fool who seems very unhappy with herself.”
It was uncanny how Julie seemed to get inside his head just then.

Happy Mother’s Day

Reva      &      Paula
What is a Mom? The title means much more than simply giving birth to a child, it’s the love and support and nurturing given to that child. A Mom can give something up without sacrificing because that child is her priority. A Mom’s love is never-ending and always a constant filling her child(ren) with confidence and security. Being a Mom means leaving your child(ren) with memories and a warm hug even long after she is gone.
My Mommy (Reva) and my Mom (Paula) [mother-in-law] earned their monikers and they left behind offspring who remember the lessons, the love, the warmth and the sometimes “crazy” ways they acted for their kids. I miss them both.
I had a lot of fun when I developed one of my characters, Sylvia Hughes, “aunt” and adopted-mother to Caitlyn in His Lucky Charm and mother to Tom in Within the Law. Sylvia was a doting mom who always wanted only the best for her kids, sometimes even resorting to well-meaning nagging and craziness…
(an excerpt from His Lucky Charm)

Dinner was chaotic. Sylvia cooked up a hearty beef stew because it was one of Tom’s favorites. Everyone sat at the round kitchen table for dinner, there was no order to their arrangement. Brandon was seated between Sylvia and Walter. Tom sat next to Walter and Caitlyn sat on Sylvia’s other side. Brandon was amazed that no matter how many different conversations were going on at the table, Sylvia managed to hear each one. And she made sure she added her opinions to each one, no matter what the topic was.
When Caitlyn asked Tom, again, if he was going to bring a date to the wedding, Sylvia added her comments. “Joyce would not have wanted you to live like this. You really should find yourself a wife.”
That was the first time that Tom hadn’t smiled for his mother’s benefit. “Ma, this subject is off limits.”
Tommy, you are a young man.” Sylvia continued. “You should not live alone.”
Ma… please.” Tom laid his fork down next to his plate.
You’re a good looking man.” She turned to Caitlyn. “Isn’t he good looking?”
Uh, yeah.”
Brandon, you’re getting married. Isn’t it a nice feeling to be settling down?”
Ma! Stop it.” Tom stood up from the table. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He left in a hurry. The back door slammed shut behind him.
Sylvia looked at the rest of the family at the table. “What did I say?” She looked at each of their faces. Caitlyn was studying her plate. “What did I say?”
Walter shook his head and kept eating. “Sylvie, you never learn. Leave the boy alone.”
What? I’m not allowed to care about my kids?”
Caitlyn put her fork down on the table and leaned over to hug Sylvia. “Aunt Syl, we love you. Tommy just needs to set his own pace. It will happen. Don’t worry.”
Sylvia took Caitlyn’s face in her hands and looked at her eyes. “I just want you two to be happy. That’s all I want.”
Caitlyn smiled. “I know.”
You hear that Brandon?” Sylvia’s voice cracked. “You better keep my baby happy.”
Yes ma’am.” Brandon looked at Caitlyn and saw her smile at him. “I plan to work at that for the rest of my life.”
Good. Very good.” Sylvia nodded and went back to eating.
The back door opened and Tom came back in. “Sorry everyone. I just needed some air.” He went to Sylvia and kissed her on the cheek. “I love you ma.” Before he walked around the table, Brandon saw Tom squeeze Caitlyn’s shoulder.
Walter stopped eating long enough to ask Tom how he was feeling.
Good dad, good.” Tom sat back down in his chair and went back to eating.
And just like that, the conversations started again. And everyone ate. And Brandon learned just what family was all about.

Everyone should have a good person to love.

Wishing you a wonderfully happy and loving Valentine’s Day

I want to share my favorite love poem by Sara Teasdale with you:

Gifts

I gave my first love laughter,
I gave my second tears,
I gave my third love silence
Thru all the years.

My first love gave me singing,
My second eyes to see,
But oh, it was my third love
Who gave my soul to me.

(brand new)

from Courage of the Heart

COURAGE OF THE HEART shows us that sometimes love is the only cure for the very deepest of emotional wounds. The story of the two lovers takes a series of unexpected and fast paced turns where lives, sanity and love are put in jeopardy. Their commitment to one another results in a spirit that binds them together and helps them to overcome physical and emotional dangers.

Davie slept only fitfully through the night. It hadn’t taken her long to realize that this was the first time she was sleeping without Adam by her side since he had come home from the hospital.

By the time the morning sun cast enough light, Davie got up as quietly as possible and changed into her jeans and a man’s flannel shirt. She carried her loafers to the door. Davie tiptoed downstairs.

Everyone in the house was asleep.

She opened the door to Adam’s room and peeked in.

“I must have finally fallen asleep…” He whispered from the couch which was made up like a bed. “I’m having a wonderful dream. You’re here.”

“Good morning.” She hurried in and kissed him. “Get up, come with me.”

“Where?”

She smiled seductively. “Trust me.”

Davie waited silently in the kitchen. It didn’t take long before Adam was by her side wearing jeans, T-shirt and sneakers.

“Come on.” She took his hand and led him outside through the kitchen door.

It was chilly, a layer of frost covered the ground. They moved quickly along the side of the building until they came to a door. Davie pulled the door open slowly to minimize the squeak of the hinges and pulled Adam inside with her.

“What is this place?” He asked.

She had pulled the door closed behind them. A small dirty glass pane above the door let in just enough light to see the small cubicle. An old wash basin hung off the wall; it had obviously not been used for a long time.

“I think it was originally meant to be a laundry room. When I was a kid it was my secret playhouse.” She put her arms around him in the tight quarters and kissed him.

“Mmm, good morning.” He held her and kissed her back. “I missed you all night.”

“I know.” She slid her hands under his T-shirt. “Show me how much.”

He nipped at her ear lobe with his teeth and caressed her through her shirt. “How did I ever manage to get so lucky to tap into all this passion you have bottled up?”

His breathing quickened when he felt the erect nub through the flannel. “No bra?” He stepped back and made a show of unbuttoning her shirt. Adam weighed her rounded breasts with his hands and bent to suckle each one in turn.

Davie ran her fingers through his hair as she held him tightly against her.

He backed her against a wall and knelt before her. He placed tiny kisses on her belly as he unsnapped her jeans to pull them down her hips and legs. Once again, he realized that she had worn no underwear and he felt his pulse racing. Kneeling before her, he tasted every part of her as she was exposed to him.

“Oh, Adam.” Davie’s breath was coming in short spurts as she felt his very intimate kisses on the inside of her thighs.

On Demand!sounds impressive.

before the release of Within the Law
…this really brings me back through time!

2008 began my journey as a
and it continues in 2009, Woo-Hoo.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and
while you shouldn’t wait for this
once a year opportunity to say “I Love You
to the ones you care about,
I thought I might share a few suggestions
on how to make the day
romantic, warm and memorable…

1) Dinner for two ~ Whether it’s a fine restaurant or dining at home, have a nice meal together (hint, forget the diets – enjoy the meal) with easy, relaxed conversation. If you are dining at home, think about using disposable plates so no one has to get stuck doing the dishes and you can move on to better things. However if you do use the fine china, wash and dry as a couple – it CAN be romantic.
2) Fill an empty jar with chocolates ~ or you can use any favorite sweet (like jelly beans). Paste heart shaped stickers around the jar, or cut and paste shapes from colored craft paper or magazine pics as decorations, tie a ribbon around the cap and present to your special valentine.
3) Have a romantic trip down memory lane ~ plan a picnic lunch in that park where you first strolled together, catch a movie at the place you had your first date (or miniature golf, play arcade games, etc). Maybe even spend an evening away visiting your honeymoon spot or the place you first made love together…
4) Have a date night at home ~ don’t let the lack of a babysitter or funds deter you. Rent a DVD or video of the first movie you saw together, pop a bag of popcorn, send the kids to bed, and cuddle up on the couch in each other’s arms. Spend the evening sipping wine/champagne/soda while reading romantic poetry to each other. Dance to a few romantic tunes on the CD player.
5) Some saucier, hotter ideas for Valentine’s Day ~ Make love in a different room of your home. Edible undies are always delectable. Gift your partner with a good book of “positions”, and then start trying them out. Dirty word “Scrabble” can lead to some hot ideas. Play a strip game of ANYTHING. Have some clean fun in a shower for two. Read hot, torrid romance novels aloud together and stop whenever the “mood” strikes you.

Have a wonderful
Valentine’s Day
filled with the warmth
of friendship and love!
