Read an E-Book Week 2013

Read an Ebook Week
March 3 through March 9

So… have I told you that all of my books are available as e-books?
Electronic books are full, real books which are readable on computers, tablets and other electronic readers (such as Kindle, Nook, IPad, Smartphones, etc.)

What a NOVEL idea!

I have an e-book reader that isn’t much bigger than a paperback novel and certainly much thinner and I have more than 134 books stored on it – it’s easy to carry this around during the day. Since I have books to read for enjoyment, reference, self-help guides and more, it’s like I always have a library at hand.

There certainly is something to the feel of a real book, the touch of the cover and pages… and there is even something to be said for the smell of a print book, and I am sure there will always be PRINT books I will want to have at hand… BUT I DON’T NEED TO LUG THEM AROUND IN MY PURSE ALL DAY LONG.
E-books are most often more economical for the consumer. For example, list price on the new James Patterson novel, Alex Cross, Run is $28.99, the Kindle price is only $11.99. And Final Sin by Chelle Cordero sells in paperback form for $14.95 but sells in Kindle and other e-book forms for just $4.99.

Such a bargain!

You’re worried because you don’t have an e-reader? Well, if you are reading this on your computer (desk, laptop or Netbook), then you have an e-reader!

You can download FREE software that will allow you to read e-books on your computer. Try the NOOK for PC, Kindle reader for the PC, or Adobe PDF reader . There are several more versions of e-readers and converters, just search online to find them. There are also sites like SMASHWORDS that offer many popular e-books in multiple formats.
Welcome to the convenience of e-books!

What ‘ya gonna do?

In one of those “kids say the darnedest things moments” when they spill the family secrets, a neighbor’s son told me “my parents always say that if it happens outside my door, I don’t need to get involved”. I wanted to ask if his parents explained what kind of things he shouldn’t be involved in – was it the argument overheard next door or the cry for help from a stranger? In the end, I decided not to question the youngster.
How much do we involve ourselves in the lives of others? And where do we draw the line?
What would you do if you knew a child was in trouble and possibly being abused by one of the adults she yearns to trust? There are some people who, by the nature of their jobs, are legally required to report all suspected child abuse such as teachers, doctors, police officers, and child care providers to name just a few. Any adult who lives with the child who has been abused is also legally required to report the situation although all too often these people are either involved in the abuse or complicity denying the existence.
What about the rest of us, what is our moral obligation to report when we’ve seen a child in distress with repeated and multiple bruises, or worse?
We need to learn to recognize the signs of abuse and not deny that it might be happening. Severe injuries, multiple bruises from obviously different occasions, fear at the idea of going home, a lack of medical care for illness or injury, detailed tales of sexual activity, consistently unkempt appearance, or frequent and constant hunger MAY be signs we should pay attention to. If a child comes to you with a blatant cry for help and story of an abusive situation, it shouldn’t be discounted without consideration. And as the parent of a child who once screamed for help standing at her bedroom window when she was angry for being sent to her room for a time-out, I am aware that sometimes things CAN be misunderstood.
If we must err though, we should err on the side of the child’s safety. Child protective agencies exist in every region and depending on the size of your municipality maybe even in your city. If you suspect the possibility of child abuse contacting them may very well be the first step in saving a child’s life. The staff at these offices are trained to determine if the information you provide is enough to warrant a more thorough investigation so they will ask you questions such as what you witnessed, if you’ve seen former evidence, and how well you know the people involved (to assess your vantage point). Your name will be kept out of it if they decide to investigate so you shouldn’t worry about repercussions. Unless it can be proven that you maliciously reported a false case, you are immune to any consequences. Cases will be investigated and any actions taken will be done in the best interests of the child.
When I researched information for my novel Bartlett’s Rule, I came across survivors of childhood abuse and one of the things repeatedly stated was why people who knew didn’t do anything to help. Physical and emotional scars never go away. Children are vulnerable and often not able to speak up and explain what is happening to them – but if we suspect abuse, we should do something to help. It’s the right thing.

It’s Read an E-book Week!

It’s Read an E-book Week
March 4 through March 10

From Plato, the ancient Classical Greek Philosopher through the German Gutenberg printing press and now the E-book. Fans of words have seen many changes and not all were received without some qualms… In the 1930’s paperback books shook up literary fans, was it even a REAL book? In the 1970s computers were quickly proving their worth by way of storage capability. The Declaration of Independence became the world’s first e-book under Project Gutenberg. Today there are more than 120-thousand free books from Project Gutenberg and their partners.

There are several available e-book formats and folks are able to enjoy many favorite genres and publications on their computers or convenient e-book readers. All of my novels are available in various (money saving) formats including Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s NOOK, as well as ALL my books in text, .pdf, Mobi (Kindle), ePub (Apple iPad/iBooks, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo), Palm Doc and HTML through Smashwords.

So why don’t you read one of my e-books
& let me know what you think?

Stock Up Now, Read an E-book Week is March 4-10

March 4-10, 2012

I caved this year and bought myself a Kindle. While the feel of real paper and a bound book in my hands is truly exquisite, I began to notice the convenience of “the e-book” as I won a contest here or there and received a free book, or I was sent a book to review or edit. On one side I had piles of books and no more shelf room and on the other I had volumes of reading material on a computer disk or, better yet, a thumb drive to plug into my Netbook while I sat in the living room.

Then I found GOLD – some e-book retailers offer their specific reading applications FREE for the computer. As soon as I found that out, I downloaded and installed Kindle for the PC, Nook for PC, and the Sony e-Reader. In addition I already had Adobe (.pdf) reader and word processing that opens .txt. So you don’t even need a separate e-reader to enjoy the convenience and economy of e-books.

I felt like I was sitting in front of an entire library wall all my own!

I decided to go the whole route though and after researching available e-readers, chose one that fit my budget and my needs the best. There were a lot of surprisingly affordable choices. I finally settled on a Kindle Keyboard 3G. I’ve found that e-books generally cost about one-third of the price of print books (some more, some less) so buying books re really economical. And a really fun fact, there are several FREE e-books in various formats available! My Kindle is loaded and anywhere I go, I always have terrific reading material.

*btw, all of my novels are available in print and e-book formats.

Publishers, from the larger conglomerates to the small-press, have found the economy of publishing in e-book format (especially for a newer author) instead of absorbing the huge investment of a run of print books. And the convenience and speed of downloads is enough to impress any avid reader. If you need more convincing, here is a well stated article on the subject: The Book Is Dead Or Soon Will Be by Nicholas Hirst.

I still plan to patronize my local brick and mortar bookstores, especially the Indie stores – but my Kindle is here to stay. To help you stock up for this year’s Read An E-Book Week, here are a few FREE .pdf downloads: Until the Ambulance Arrives Love and Chocolate Nature’s Gifts 2011 A Gift For You from VHP Authors Celebrate Glacier National Park and Sweet Victory Companion Cookbook

OEBD for the holidays

One of the more popular gifts being sent to servicemen and women of our coalition forces this holiday season is an e-book reader (Kindle, Sony, iPhone, Nook, Blackberry etc.) Here is the chance to fill those readers with lots of great reading material – and e-books from Smashwords are available to read on web browsers and laptops/netbooks as well.

When I first signed up for Operation E-Book Drop via Smashwords and author Ed Patterson I had six books – today I have nine books. Also increasing in numbers is the amount of authors who are participating in this wonderful program – on Oct 31, 2010, Mark Coker, the founder of Smashwords, said “Ed Patterson informs me over 500 indie authors are now participating in Operation Ebook Drop. Awesome! Congrats to all.

I am pleased to say that I am STILL a participating author in Operation E-Book Drop.

Servicemen and women of our Coalition Forces are away from home and putting themselves on the line for the rest of us. No matter what your political beliefs are, most of us agree that we need to support our men and women as we pray for their safe return.

All coalition military personnel deployed overseas who need multi-format ebooks are eligible. According to Ed, “If you’re overseas and away from your home and loved ones, your dependence on reading might increase – and so we are gifting you ebooks for Kindle, Sony, iPhone, Blackberry etc.”
For free ebooks, please email Ed at
ed w pat @ att . net (remove the spaces)

What is Operation E-Book Drop?

Author Ed Patterson had an online conversation with a soldier stationed in Iraq who was having difficulty getting books to read on his Kindle – there isn’t a whole lot to do for entertainment there. Ed sent the soldier a complete file of his books in Kindle format – and then the idea struck him that there might be other soldiers and other authors who would want to participate. Sure enough, lists started to form and books were being sent over the internet in various e-book formats.

Then the wonderful staff at Smashwords found out about this effort and decided to promote the program – Smashwords authors can use special coupon codes to send the members of the Coalition Forces so they can download books to their reading devices. Since Smashwords offers books in several ebook formats (including Kindle, Palm, .pdf and more), books are readable on all reading devices and even with a web browser.

Kimberlee at Vanilla Heart Publishing made sure that any VHP authors who wanted had the proper coupon codes to send…
