Why Did She Jump? by Joan Childs

Turning Personal Tragedy Into Inspiration For
Others To Learn How To Find Healing And Peace

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported the incidence of suicide is up by 24% since 1999.

A mother of five and grandmother to nine, married and divorced four times, and a clinical social worker in private practice for nearly forty years, Joan Childs thought she had experienced or seen it all. But nothing could have prepared her for the death of her beautiful daughter, Pam.  A brilliant psychotherapist, Pam battled constantly with Bipolar Disorder until one fateful summer day in 1998 when her demons overwhelmed her, she plunged to her death from a 15th floor balcony. Even with their combined credentials and medical knowledge, Pam still could not be saved. She became the driving force behind Joan Childs’ latest book, Why Did She Jump? (HCI Books), and brings hope to anyone struggling with grief from the loss of a child or loved one to mental illness, that there is hope for better tomorrows.

Fierce and tender, Joan’s compelling storytelling gives us an insightful yet sensitive look at her daughter’s life dealing with Bipolar Disorder. Peeling back the layers of pain and despair, Joan takes readers through the dark days of grief and guilt she felt both as a mother and as a frustrated professional who doesn’t understand why more hasn’t been done about this disease. With brutal honesty, Joan recalls how the lives of her entire family became entwined with her daughter’s illness as they watched her sink deeper into a place where no one could reach her. It is a powerful story of courage, hope, acceptance, and finally, forgiveness. Now, Joan reflects on her daughter’s many accomplishments, in spite of her illness, and sees them as Pam’s legacy to the world.

In an earlier book, The Myth of the Maiden: On Being a Woman, the author looks at the evolution of women from helpless maidens to dragon-slayers. Both books are excellent resources for personal growth and development after life changes and loss. In spite of many personal losses, Joan ‘walks the talk;’ she lives life to its fullest and maintains a level of energy and passion at age 76 that would put a 40-year-old to shame! A strikingly beautiful woman and energetic and inspiring speaker, Joan ignites the passion in others to find their own path to courage, healing and hope after the heartbreak and struggle of losing a loved one/child to suicide or any other cause of death.

Joan’s television series, Solutions, was dedicated to the memory of her daughter Pamela, and offered information and resources for anyone suffering from mental and mood disorders.  She provides lectures, workshops and seminars dedicated to her profession of mental health and women’s issues and is a spokesperson for bipolar disorder and suicide.

Excerpts from five-star reviews on Amazon.com:

“… I lost my 23 year old daughter Kaitlyn to suicide… she was just starting her 3rd year of medical school… I have come to know (Joan’s) daughter through her eyes and memories and she was a beautiful person and was so loved. Her book has truly touched my heart.”

“… A true story of how Pamela, a young, beautiful psychotherapist, lived with a chronic debilitating mental illness and how her family got caught up in the whirlwind. It is also a story of how the mental health system continually failed her in not being able to provide her with any kind of useful assistance… This is a book for anyone who is contemplating a career in the health care field to make them aware of the challenges ahead.”

“This book should be read by anyone who’s lost a loved one due to mental illness and/or suicide. As a mother, I can’t imagine the pain Joan must have felt after losing her beautiful daughter. Her strength is inspiring.”

“Readers will learn more about Bipolar I Disorder, which thankfully, not every family has to deal with, but also about the grieving process, which we do all deal with. Despite being a heart-breaking story about illness, death and grief, Joan skillfully leaves you feeling better and actually hopeful at the end.”

Unemployable! by David Thomas Roberts

The Renegade CapitalistTM Says Make Yourself Unemployable!

This may be the best time in history to start a business. Best-selling author David Thomas Roberts, Renegade CapitalistTM and serial entrepreneur since age twenty-one, has created a guide for those who are no longer content to have someone else dictating their daily commute, their income, schedules and vacations. What does it really take for someone to jump off the employment treadmill and participate in the free enterprise system, unencumbered by traditionally accepted myths? Roberts lays out business strategies and principles in his book Unemployable! How to Be Successfully Unemployed Your Entire Life (Defiance Press and Publishing, LLC).

In Roberts’ quest to find new and innovative investments, the best business plan submitted through the Renegade CapitalistTM website (http://renegadecapitalist.com) will be awarded up to $25,000 in investment money. He is also available for speaking engagements and consulting services for new business owners.

Always challenging the status quo, Roberts has built a lifetime of success in defiance of accepted business norms which has led him to be dubbed the “Renegade CapitalistTM.”

In college, Roberts became discouraged because no one was teaching him what he wanted to understand: how to become an entrepreneur. He then dropped out and within a year opened a multimillion air freight business with his brother. The downturn in the oil industry caught Roberts by surprise and eventually the business failed. Roberts took many valuable lessons from this experience.

Undaunted, Roberts launched another business which he later successfully sold.  Roberts has built numerous successful businesses; he is the founder and CEO of Teligistics, a leading multi-million-dollar telecom technology management firm started with $1,000 on a folding card table in a closet. Now, acknowledging the need for more opportunities, classes and degree paths for aspiring entrepreneurs, Roberts has advised major universities and MBA programs on the creation of degree paths and curriculum for entrepreneurial studies.

Roberts has two best-selling political thrillers to his credit, Patriots of Treason (2012) and A State of Treason (2014). Inspired by his four children, he recognized the need for an unconventional business book to share his expertise. Roberts will soon release his fourth book, a continuation of the political thriller series, and is working on several more business books digging deeper into the principles of Unemployable!

Roberts lives with his wife of thirty-four years near Houston, Texas. He has four grown children and two grandchildren. For more information, please visit http://renegadecapitalist.com and http://davidthomasrobertsauthor.com

Reviews:

Kirkus Reviews: “….Roberts makes a strong case that some people are ‘unemployable’ because, like him, they are better served founding their own companies and working for themselves. In engaging short chapters that include both personal anecdotes and a smattering of advice, Roberts covers….a worthwhile, fundamental introduction to key business topics….”

Randy Council, COO and Co-Founder of Teligistics Inc.: “Unemployable! is a great read, a real-life success story based on the fundamentals of success lost in our parental and educational systems. It should be a MANDATORY read for all high school seniors and their parents.”

Robert E. Marling, Jr., Chairman and CEO, Woodforest Financial Group, Inc.: “Enjoyable to read, filled with compelling facts, and powerfully to the point, Unemployable! is a must read for anyone preparing to take that leap into the world of ‘unknowns’ that we call ‘entrepreneurship.”’

Randal Miller, President, New Summit Advisors: “…boldly honest. He is not afraid to speak the truth about the challenges he has faced as an entrepreneur for over 30 years. No filler, no fluff, reading Unemployable! is like having a successful mentor available at your fingertips.”

Amazon readers say:

Jeff Davidson, author and speaker, Breathing Space Institute: “A long term veteran of entrepreneurship himself, Thomas explains why now is one of the greatest times possible for you to be in your own business and he offers action steps for you to succeed….His description of ‘renegade capitalism’ is priceless, and if you think that you can be a renegade capitalist yourself, this is the book for you.”

Susan Keefe: “I agree with everything that the author David Thomas Roberts has written. This book is absolutely packed with good advice. If you have the thirst to be your own boss then this is the book for you! It is practical, informative, down to earth and yet at the same time so inspirational.”

Pam G.: “…an enjoyable read from start to finish….I really enjoyed this book on a personal level. He nailed my character traits and the joys and challenges that I’ve found with running my own business….his enthusiasm and energy come across in his writing….I plan to give this book to my 16-year-old son, as he is searching for what he wants to do as a career, and doesn’t see himself sitting in a cubicle from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.”

Amazon Customer: “Impressive and educational!…if you’ve ever had the mindset to become an entrepreneur, this book helps in the transition from, ‘I wish I could,’ to ‘wow, maybe I can too.’

Game: The Resurrection Of Tim Tebow

Game: The Resurrection Of Tim Tebow by Marc Shapiro

Riverdale Avenue Books is pleased to announce the publication of Game: The Resurrection of Tim Tebow, which tells a different kind of sports story. The book, by New York Times-bestselling Author Marc Shapiro, does not focus on his virginity, his religious beliefs, his bigger than life ‘nice guy’ character and the millions of Tebow maniacs that live and breathe his every move and pronouncement. Game: The Resurrection of Tim Tebow is a hard and detailed look at the rise of a football player and the situations, cynicism and politics that can ultimately sidetrack, delay and ultimately destroy a career.

“At the end of the day all most football fans wanted to know was ‘could Tim Tebow play the game,” says Shapiro. “They could care less about who he’s dating, is he having sex and how much of a nice guy he is. They just want to know if he can play the damned game. And that’s the question I’ve attempted to answer. This is the ultimate gridiron dance. It’s what Tebow brings to the game and how the various levels of football have accepted or, as we have found out, rejected it. This is a facts and figures book, the kind of things the tabloids and TMZ won’t touch. But for the millions of hardcore fans who live and die by football, this is the reality.”

Game: The Resurrection Of Tim Tebow begins in his youth where a seemingly rigid and yes possibly corrupt education system conspired to keep Tebow out of the sport.  It focuses on how closed and immature a society regional high school football can be, especially when there’s a player in their midst who is so overwhelmingly good. There’s his triumphs in college ball, followed by his entry into the NFL where he truly performed miracles in Denver only to be shoved aside like yesterday’s news. Then he is picked up by The New York Jets whose indecisiveness ended with a wasted year and finally a shot in New England that ended this month when he was cut. The book also follows his interaction with future killer and teammate Aaron Hernandez.

“It’s not that Tebow is not at fault here,” declares Shapiro. “His pride and ego certainly got in the way. If he had not insisted on playing quarterback and considered another position, he might still be in the NFL. But he insisted that he could play the position in a way that the National Football League was not ready to consider, accept or knew how to deal with.”

Riverdale Avenue Books Publisher Lori Perkins commented, “It is such a thrill to be publishing a book about a football  legend as the story is just coming to a close, or its climax.”

Article – Online Marketing and Promotion

Pleased to say I have an article in the Jan/Feb 2011 issue of

Vision: A Resource for Writers
an online magazine with articles of interest to writers of
fiction and non-fiction

Getting your book out there is one of the most crucial aspects to success. No matter how well written your story or how enjoyable it is to read, unless it is noticed, it won’t sell. I also read somewhere that it takes an average of three to seven impressions before most people think to buy a book.
