In Connecting with Coincidence: The New Science for Using Synchronicity and Serendipity in Your Life (HCI Books—March 2016–$15.95), Dr. Bernard Beitman acknowledges that some coincidences will be best explained by randomness, personal responsibility, and Divine Mystery, but most times by a combination of the three. While on the way to meet up with her estranged husband, the participant found herself on the other end of a misdialed call with a woman who was in an abusive relationship as well, and terrified out of her mind. Because of this coincidental call, the woman left her husband indefinitely. Meaningful coincidences like that one happen all the time. But when we learn to recognize and understand them—and perhaps even help manifest them—they can improve our lives dramatically.

About the Author:

Dr. Bernard Beitman is the first psychiatrist since Carl Jung to attempt to systematize the study of coincidences. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia and former Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He attended Yale Medical School and completed a psychiatric residency at Stanford. Dr. Beitman has received two national awards for his psychotherapy training program and is internationally known for his research into the relationship between chest pain and panic disorder. In addition, he has edited two issues of Psychiatric Annals that focus on coincidences. Dr. Beitman is the founder of Coincidence Studies. 1. In what parts of daily life do meaningful coincidences occur?

Meaningful coincidences occur in all parts of life including money, romance, work, family, health, friends, and creativity.

2. What are the most common coincidences?

Common coincidences are:
 I think of calling someone, only to have that person unexpectedly call me.
 I am introduced to people who unexpectedly further my work/career/education.
 I think of an idea and hear or see it on the radio, TV or internet.

3. How can coincidences be helpful?

Coincidences can be supportive, psychologically insightful, and help to find a needed person, thing or idea. Some are simply aesthetically pleasing.

4. How do you explain the causes of meaningful coincidences?

Meaningful coincidences are typically explained by either God-Universe or Random-Probability. However, the person experiencing the coincidence often has more to do with creating it than is usually recognized.

5. Can some coincidences suggest that we have abilities that we do not know we have?

Coincidences may point to mysterious human capacities. For example, many people say that they sometimes experience strong emotions or physical sensations that were simultaneously experienced at a distance by someone they love.

6. How do people differ in their ability to recognize coincidences?

Some people see more coincidences than others. They more easily connect thoughts in their minds with the events around them. They tend to be more spiritual, religious, and intuitive.

7. Under what conditions are coincidences more likely to happen?

Meaningful coincidences are more likely during major life transitions including marriage, job changes, severe illness and death of a loved one.

8. How can you increase the number of coincidences?

The frequency of meaningful coincidences can be increased by deciding to pay attention to them, keeping a coincidence diary, discussing them with others, meditation, altered states of consciousness, and honing intuition.

9. How can coincidences be misused?

They can make a person feel excessively important, be used for personal gain while hurting others, and be used too often in decision making without relying on other information.
